Notations 43.8 is a living archive representing the shifted experiences of comprised living spaces during the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Notations 43,8 investigates the cartographic notations of worldwide quarantine.
Responding to the emerging challenges of the current Covid-19 crisis, we invite a global community to virtually share the diverse manifestations of isolation. The project is curated collaboration with Elfie Carle. The invitation was translated to 12 languages and received 73 contributions.
43,8 square meters comprise the average living space of a German resident. Whether the living space is domestic or institutional, whether inhabited alone or collectively: at present, we are globally thrown back to this space and, with that, to ourselves. We are confronted with restrictive and/or protective national, institutional and domestic limitations. Notations 43,8 wants to investigate the cartographic notations of worldwide quarantine. Responding to the emerging challenges of the current Covid-19 crisis, we invite a global community to virtually share the diverse manifestations of isolation.
Looking past the bifurcation we want to focus on the intricate changes and cuts in our daily lives: our routines, our performative interaction with space, our forms of inhabiting limitation and the deriving ways of communication.Notations 43,8 questions the new reality of the daily, albeit under politically divergent auspices. With these narratives, we want to shed light on our experience of presence and absence in collective transcultural isolation.
We believe in the profound resilience of exuberant imaginations and the community-building power of sharing experiences. We therefore invite everyone to participate by submitting the following notations:
- Notation of Quarantine
A notation, visualization or cartography of indoor isolation. Can be a ground plan of your quarantine space drawn in movement; can be drawn schemes of absence/presence; can be a piece of music notation that reacts to your current quarantine surroundings.
- Notation of Perception
A notation of any textual, visual, auditive representation of your current perception of your direct or larger surroundings. Can be in writing, photography, video or other mediums.
